EFFECTIVE DICTIONARY USE IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

This study investigates the impact of effective dictionary use on vocabulary acquisition in language learning. Despite the widespread availability of dictionaries, many learners underutilize them or fail to use them strategically, limiting their vocabulary growth [1]. This research explores how targeted strategies, such as identifying context-specific meanings, using example sentences, and revisiting learned words, can enhance vocabulary retention and application. Fifty intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners participated in the study, with one group receiving training on effective dictionary use and the other continuing with their usual habits. The results show that learners who applied the strategies demonstrated a 35% improvement in vocabulary test scores, compared to a 15% increase in the control group. Additionally, qualitative data revealed that learners in the experimental group engaged more actively with their dictionaries, gaining deeper insights into word meanings and usage. The study concludes that dictionary use, when guided by effective strategies, significantly improves vocabulary acquisition, retention, and practical application, highlighting the need for incorporating dictionary training into language learning curricula.
